Fluorite Crystals Half Polished

Fluorite (Also termed Fluorspar) is a halide mineral composed of calcium fluoride that can come in many colours and shapes.

If you’re here, you’re probably looking for the folklore and the way these stones are used magically and spiritually. Fluorite doesn’t have a huge amount of written folklore, but we’ve collated some of our personal notes on living tradition folklore from around the UK.

In the UK, Fluorite crystals are stones of glamour- a multiplicity of colours merging and shifting in one crystal. It distracts with it’s beauty as it shifts from one colour to another, it conceal and reveals things with it’s varying layers of transparency. They’re used in glamour magic, for both light glamours, such as misdirection and heavy glamours such as complete transformation and altering of perception.

Fluorite is also a stone connected to the fair folk- in particular a group called mine fairies. It is possibly from this that Fluorite gains it’s glamour abilities and connotations- as this is a gift that the Fair Folk excel in. Fluorite mimics many other gifts of the fair folk, and fair folk are known to be more welcomed when there is fluorite around. For those who do not wish for too much fair folk interaction, a nearby dish of salt should suffice.

Fluorite also clears stagnation and keeps things in motion. It’s a little like it’s name suggests- from Latin ‘Fluere’ which means ‘to flow’. The name was given to fluorite because of it’s ability to cause flow when using in smelting. And like many things, it’s physical form mirrors aspects of it’s spiritual one. Because of these associations, many witches use it to create new ideas, as it taps into the flow of other streams of information. Many also use it as an attunement, linking or mirroring stone, because of it’s ability to match the flow of other spirits and energy.

If you work with it a lot, you may find you become less susceptible to psychic manipulation, as you’ll begin to identify the flow of things like glamours, and then can see when they’re being used against you. This ability to work with and start to notice patterns from working with this stone is why many talk about the fact that it helps all matters of spiritual connection.

Fluorite was used in a lot of offerings to Gods in times past, particularly in Egypt and Rome, with offerings of carved and raw fluorite stones given in offering. This makes it a particularly good stone to have on altars and shrines.
