The Technical Details
The miracles associated with St. Cuthbert’s well are recorded in the twelfth century Libellus. One miracle involved the curing of paralysis, one involved cursing the home of a Local Lord who took a cow from a poor man- setting fire to it via a lightning strike while protecting the cow, and the last miracle involved divine revenge upon a thief.
The well is recorded in folklore as being discovered by St.Cuthbert- who was a famous douser, and he would often appear in visions when a miracle had been done via his well. He followed Celtic Christianity and Folk Catholicism, and was well known for his visions, meditating and praying in natural landscapes like the sea. The well in it’s present form is directed through a conduit, and has dried up. It is still used to this day for baptisms, and is located just outside of the church walls. The Well is also known as Cuddy’s Well.
Bellingham is one of the places where St.Cuthbert’s ‘incorruptible’ body as a relic was taken when fleeing the Danes. St. Cuthbert is the patron saint of Northumbria.
“While Cuthbert suffered, a rider approached him on horseback, dressed all in white, and told him how to treat his knee. Cuthbert followed the advice and soon his knee was restored. Afterwards, Cuthbert realized that this rider had been an angel.”
How this water was collected
This water was collected as part of a pilgrimage Tarn went on around the borders of Scotland. Bellingham is one of the points on St.Cuthbert’s way- a trail that marks many of the places connected to St. Cuthbert.
