Smokey Quartz is known for it’s powers of sorcery, divination and necromancy. It’s a stone used to connect to the world under, the other world and the deep night sky. It’s often been used as a spirit trap/ spirit house/spirit box in the past and is known to be excellent for both channelling and capturing spirits. Smokey Quartz is a classical material for seeing stones, crystal balls and other scrying tools- one of the most famous being Dee’s ‘shrew stone’, now kept by the British museum.

It was carried in times of epidemics as a protective charm. As a martial stone used within Scottish craft, it was set in the head of dirks and other knives, and adorned the Highland dress. It was used for subtlety, and connection to the craft,

In some older texts it is simply known as ‘Cairngorm’ or ‘Scotch Topaz’. Some other varieties of smokey quartz are also known as ‘Morion’ or ‘Mormorion’.

Ways of Working

Crystals are excellent to use within spell workings- they’re spirits to be worked with as much as any candle or herb! They can be placed into a spell box, charged and buried, crafted into devotional items, used within wisht boards and sigil work and so much more! They can be left in an area of the home to be constantly worked with as a permanent companion, or simply moved to the altar when you want to do focused workings.
