Ormer Shells- also known as Venus ear- and other shells are a key part of British folk magic practice. They’re found in the South, and are fished by the phase of the moon- the full and new moon are known as ‘ormering tides’. Fishing families have been visiting the same ormer spots for centuries, using the same heirloom tools for generations. There’s much local folklore about the ormer and are a key part of the heritage of these places. They’re often used for lunar, sea, and fire magic as well as being part of casting lot divination.
The use of shells as tools dates back to 44,000 BC in the UK- found within Kent’s Cavern- used by ancient humans as prehistoric shell torches or lamps. Animal fat and moss were used, placed in the bottom of the shell and set alight. Further on in time, these shells were used as a fire-proof dish for smouldering herbs, offering bowls, powder containers and more.
The other use we see historically for Ormer shells is their purpose in making Mother-of-pearl jewellery. The Ormer themselves were often used for food.
We offer them here so that people can reconnect to ancient tools of the islands. Using the shell as a lamp connects the working to: the land- the moss, the sky- the burning heat and the sea- the shell itself.
These Ormer shells average at 3-3.5cm, you will get one Shell per purchase.
Ormer Fishing is carefully regulated, with tagging systems in place, to maintain a healthy population. We support legal companies that seek to keep the Ormer populations happy and healthy!
