Orange as a colour in British folk magic, spirituality, folklore and conjuration is a tricky subject. Orange doesn’t arrive into the English language as a colour until the 1600s. Other terms used before this time to describe what we now know as the colour ‘orange’, would be “Yellow-Red”, “Saffron”, “Gold”, “Mary-Gold”, “Tawny”, “Red-Gold”.

Here’s some ways that Orange is used traditionally in British folk magic, spirituality, folklore and conjuration:

  • Harvest and Food- Used to protect the harvest, and bless the food from the harvest. Mary-Gold- the plant Calendula is used to dye and bless cheese, butter and bread. Especially tied with Lammas. The first loaf is always seen as being orange-honey coloured, and is used for warding and abundance.
  • Love Charms- Linking to both the rising dawn, love magic, Mary’s Gold and Venus, orange was often used in love charm work to directly appeal to those spirits.
  • Rising or Setting Sun- In the UK, the orange of the rising and setting sun (mostly the rising sun) is described as ‘day-red’- dæġrǣd. Aurora, the Goddess of Dawn, is described as being cloaked in saffron- “The Goddess of the Morning Red”
  • New Beginnings- In association with the rising sun, it also connects in with new beginnings. The dawn of a new day.
  • The Embodied Sun- Solar workings within yourself or your life- the abundance and stability of the sun brought within. The “Warmer” solar workings.
  • Prophecy- Mary’s Gold as a colour links to prophecy and the divine.
  • Purity and Constancy- In Roman beliefs, it coloured the flammeum, the “flame‑coloured” veil of brides and the Flaminica Dialis (wife of Jupiter’s high priest), both of whom had strict ritual purity rules.
  • Spirituality and Ceremony-  A famous colour of the robes of priests and devotees in Roman Religion. Hekate is described as Krokopeplos (saffron cloaked), seen in the Orphic hymns as the saffron-cloaked goddess of the heavens.
  • Love and Sensuality- Based on the colours of Venus, during the medieval era, “Adult entertainment” workers would be made to wear saffron coloured robes. Freya’s tears are also described as “red-Gold”, and she was associated with love and sensuality.
  • Marian Devotion- Because of oranges deep links in British folklore to the Marigold- Mary’s Gold, orange is sometimes used for Marian devotion. It appeals directly to the Calendula spirits.
  • Transmutation of emotions to action- Freya’s Tears were describe as red-gold. She was a Goddess of love, beauty, fertility, sex, war and magic; her red‑gold tears encode love‑sorrow alchemised into wealth, and later interpreters stress that red‑gold links her emotional intensity to prosperity and magical power. Orange is also linked to the rising and setting sun, the travel between the world of sleep and the world of waking-  the world of the subconscious and the world of action.
  • Ambition and Career- Often used for ambition and career because of the links to abundance, completion of projects, as from sunrise to sunset, and the sparking of new ideas. Between the Yellow Red- Yellow is often thought of as being the hard logic of the colour world- Red is the fiery passion- Orange is between the two., and so perfect for career options.
  • Divine Inspiration and Creativity- Orange was often seen to be a “ray of light” from God or Angels, sparking creativity, joy and inspiration. This is seen in a lot of older manuscripts, and is often in alternating colours with either red, yellow or blue,.
