Cecil Hugh Williamson is not well known out of specific circles, despite founding the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle and living a long life full of witchcraft- even doing BBC interviews on the subject. He had a long history of recording folklore and exploring the magical traditions of Britain.
The collection of spells, charms, folklore and other information found within this book were found as a handwritten manuscript that was uncovered as a the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic was being refurbished.
The fully annotated manuscript is the basis of this book, which is then complemented by a history of Cecil Williamson and the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, a treatise on Cecil Williamson’s vision of traditional Witchcraft – the practices and the philosophy of the wayside witches, an account of his meetings with Aleister Crowley and Gerald Gardner, and a controversial account of his witnessing of the birth of ‘Wicca’.
This book is an excellent compendium of practices for the Traditional witch, or a valuable resource for folklorists and historians. It shines a light on witchcraft during a period of pivotal change.
Why we love it
This is on of the books we’ve had on the Bramble and Bone bookshelves for a long time. It remains a firm favourite- a true compendium of knowledge of all things seen in the Craft. This is almost within itself a time capsule. A perfect snapshot of the time between the Old Traditions of witchcraft becoming more scarce before the New Age truly took hold of the Craft in the UK, and the aftermath of the New Age traditions and Wicca- and how they changed the landscape of witchcraft forever.
The spell and charms contained within this book are still useful to this day- and touches on a few topics that are often not talked about enough in witchcraft today- the concept of ‘living’ and ‘dead’ water and much more!
