  • A Witch's Natural History is a compilation of previously published essays on the relationship between Witch, folklore and nature. This particular book focuses on the animals, eco systems and plants connected to the figure of the witch. Many books will mention the more culturally maligned creatures such as reptiles, amphibians, crows and rats, however, this book also explores the less well known creatures that share lore with the witch- the more commonly neglected birds, spiders, insects and snails. A Witch's Natural history focuses on some of the most famous- and most obscure tales of witchcrafts history with nature- from the toad-bone amulet in East Anglian witchcraft to the seductive Queen Rat of the Toshers in Bermondsey. This book is an excellent introduction to traditional witchcraft's collaboration and understanding of the natural world. A book not only for Craft practitioners, but also anybody who is interested in the natural world and the impact it has on folklore, beliefs and practices. Add to basket

  • We retail this book at 50% off because we believe that knowledge should be made accessible for everyone.  Knowing Demons, Knowing Spirits, an authentic look at the demons, angels, fairies and spirits from the perspective of our ancestors. A book well needed in a world so full of misinformation about these spirit beings. For truthfully, they are neither wholly malevolent or benevolent- even in the eyes of those who came before. This book gives the understanding and cosmology behind these beings and breathes fresh life into old tales. Knowing Demons, Knowing Spirits is a history book about how our witch, and non-witch ancestors perceived preternatural beings, such as demons, spirits, angels, fairies and other beings. (Specifically during the Early Modern period, which includes the years 1500s-1750s) This explores how all different types of people perceived and worked with these beings that existed outside, and just within human perception. It explores all matters of benevolence and malevolence within the spiritual realms. This book covers the Protestant Reformation, the Scientific revolution and the Enlightenment. "The experience of reading this book has given me a better understanding not only of the beliefs of our ancestors and the inhabitants of the lands they conquered but also of our Western mind-set which has done so much to create the modern world. The book manages to be both educational and entertaining, and is well worth reading." (Robin Carlile, Magonia review of books, July 26, 2019) Why we love it We love this book because it explores in depth the interactions between different types of spirit 'classes' and the types of magic that was worked with them. This book won't give you an easy 1-2-3 on how to summon demons and how to contact an angel, but what it will give is the backstory to these spirits. Learning the metaphysics and cosmology behind these spirits is truly the best practice for working in a conducive way with these beings. This is the sort of information that breathes life into spirit work and is often very much missing from standard pagan and spirit work books. • We retail this book at 50% off because we believe that knowledge should be made accessible for everyone.  Scottish Witches and Witch-hunters explores several areas of witchcraft in Scotland and it's vilification and condemnation. It takes a look at 12 different areas of Scottish Witchcraft, from the real witches to those condemned who may have just been quarrelling with the neighbours. This book delves into folk belief, Scottish witchcraft, as well as the other side of the coin- the witch hunting itself. A great book to pick up if you're interested in the witchcraft of Britain. “This is a book that is fresh and thought-provoking, and its authors are to be congratulated on their varied, precise, and well-researched contributions. … Scottish Witches and Witch-Hunters is a fantastically useful resource, and can only further stimulate work in the area. Julian Goodare and his team of contributors have given us a wide-ranging, provocative, and deeply scholarly volume, in which all the chapters are valuable, and the whole really is more than the sum of the parts.” (Marion Gibson, Folklore, Vol. 126 (3), 2015) Scottish Witchcraft is edited by Julian Goodare. Why we love it We love this book for many reasons- of course, we're a big fan of a historically accurate book, but this book also takes into account the many international influences on Scottish Witchcraft. This isn't often seen, and we're glad it make it into this book. It give special mention to the familiar spirit, as well as charming as a form of magic. As per usual, it's very well written and really makes the history juicy. It gives fresh new life to the stories of these people who were hunted as witches. It's on our personal bookshelf! • Der Lange Verborgene Freund appeared in German, written by John George Hohman in 1820- appearing later in English as 'Pow-wows' or 'Long Lost Friend'. (It's as a result of this book that the Dutch Pennsylvania tradition of folk magic became known as 'Pow-wow') This book is a wonderful collection of traditional European folk-magic formulas for a vast range of simple rituals, charms, spells, talismans, prayers, benedictions, magical folk healing, bindings, remedies and recipes for humans as well as various non-magical tips for matters of rural or domestic life. In this version, published by Troy Books, Gemma Gary has arranged the disorganised content in an immediately usable order- solidifying into sections of Curative Arts, Animal Arts, Arts against Evildoers, Protective Arts and Propitious Arts. The section on Propitious Arts focuses on magical and non magical practices for success, good fortune, safety and well being in various areas of life, including gambling, hunting, games, divination and legal matters. This edition is illustrated by Gemma Gary's line drawings, inspired by Dutch Pennsylvanian folk art, charms and traditional hex signs. Why we love it This is our favourite edition of the Long Lost Friend, and is also the edition we find the most easily accessible, readable and the best for quick reference. This book represents an important part of occult and folk magic history, and the spells still hold up hundreds of years later.  Some of the spells are fascinating and inspiring- a really useful book! • The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage – was translated into English by S. L. Mac Gregor Mathers from a French document in 1897. The text claims to be from the 15th century. however the earliest known versions of the manuscript date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. There are several old manuscripts in existence, in French as well as German. This grimoire lead to the formation of many ceremonial traditions, as well as providing rituals for the more learned curnningfolk. The text tells the story of how ‘Abraham of Worms’ encountered an Egyptian mage named Abramelin, from whom Abraham received the secrets of a powerful Kabbalistic magical system. This system consists of lengthy and elaborate rites and preparatory practices, in order to gain the ‘knowledge and conversation’ of one’s ‘guardian angel’ via whom magical secrets will be revealed unto the practitioner. Via evocations of the twelve Kings and Dukes of Hell, the practitioner will gather a number of familiar spirits of aid to the operative magic encountered within the ‘third book’ of this text. The operative magic of the book, which like the operative content of other popular grimoires became incorporated into folk-magical practices, is centered around 242 magic word square talismans. Within the lore of the tome, through the use of these squares the practitioner may gain an array of powers, many of which are those sought after within the folk-magical and cunning arts, such as knowing the past and the future, the conjuration of various spirits and visions, weather magic, to gain treasures and wealth, to cure various maladies, to excite love or hatred, to discover thefts and to open locks.
