Dream Work is a favoured skill by the Hop spirit. Placing a pouch of Hops under the pillow will help with all manners of dreamwork, whether it’s to use the dreams to search for answers, to travel, to prophesise, or just to get a good night’s sleep.
Hops are also used for binding, the holding together of two things. It’s used in this way for wedding, curses and everything inbetween. It’s a very adaptive binding too- the hop plant grow and binds wherever there is string, so to does it grow and adapt to new circumstances.
Hops hold a particular place in folklore because of the large amount of working class folks that moved to the country seasonally to work the hop farms in the summer. This meant that the hops were often worked with magically for the things these working class folks needed- the cohesion of family, abundance and luck. The hops plants provided, and learnt as much from these folks as the folks did from them. Hops became so ingrained in the culture, specifically of Kent that there’s specific festivals and even Christian Prayers centred around the Hop.

Every year- to this day- there are Hop Hoodening festivals, celebrated by the common folk. According to locals in the area, the oral folklore says that it was pagan in origin and became Christianised. The festival was celebrated with Hooden horses, squries and dancing. The Hop Queen was crowned every year with a Hops vine wreath. In churches in Kent, the hops are blessed with the following prayer for abundance and fertility.
“Father of Christ and Our Father, Lord of all creation, by your blessing let these hops be a reminder that the seeds of your kingdom are sown in this world, in our labour and leisure; and grant that we may be active in your purposes and share in your joy. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN”
