Basil is known as being a holy plant, used to bless and purify. Basil is an incredibly common plant to use in holy water recipes- the basil is infused into the water and left to sit.

Basil is also a common herb to use in ancestral and necromancy rites. It’s often used as an incense. It blesses the spirits long gone but can also can act as an invocatory aid. It’s burned at funerals to bless the ancestors as they move from one world to another. It also eases their journey to the next world. It’s known to open the gates of heaven.

It’s this world travelling capability that makes it perfect for initiations and sabbat traveling and soul flight.

When worked with, there’s a unique piece of folklore that one is meant to curse the basil when you plant it or first start working with it. This is to make any malignant spirits think the plant is worthless and leave the plant alone…. Or occasionally give the devil a better head start. Basil in many cultures was almost seen as a necessary evil- it was always regarded with suspicion because of it’s wavering moral nature, but ultimately it was a plant needed by all.
