  • Der Lange Verborgene Freund appeared in German, written by John George Hohman in 1820- appearing later in English as 'Pow-wows' or 'Long Lost Friend'. (It's as a result of this book that the Dutch Pennsylvania tradition of folk magic became known as 'Pow-wow') This book is a wonderful collection of traditional European folk-magic formulas for a vast range of simple rituals, charms, spells, talismans, prayers, benedictions, magical folk healing, bindings, remedies and recipes for humans as well as various non-magical tips for matters of rural or domestic life. In this version, published by Troy Books, Gemma Gary has arranged the disorganised content in an immediately usable order- solidifying into sections of Curative Arts, Animal Arts, Arts against Evildoers, Protective Arts and Propitious Arts. The section on Propitious Arts focuses on magical and non magical practices for success, good fortune, safety and well being in various areas of life, including gambling, hunting, games, divination and legal matters. This edition is illustrated by Gemma Gary's line drawings, inspired by Dutch Pennsylvanian folk art, charms and traditional hex signs. Why we love it This is our favourite edition of the Long Lost Friend, and is also the edition we find the most easily accessible, readable and the best for quick reference. This book represents an important part of occult and folk magic history, and the spells still hold up hundreds of years later.  Some of the spells are fascinating and inspiring- a really useful book! • The Sacred Magic of Abramelin the Mage – was translated into English by S. L. Mac Gregor Mathers from a French document in 1897. The text claims to be from the 15th century. however the earliest known versions of the manuscript date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. There are several old manuscripts in existence, in French as well as German. This grimoire lead to the formation of many ceremonial traditions, as well as providing rituals for the more learned curnningfolk. The text tells the story of how ‘Abraham of Worms’ encountered an Egyptian mage named Abramelin, from whom Abraham received the secrets of a powerful Kabbalistic magical system. This system consists of lengthy and elaborate rites and preparatory practices, in order to gain the ‘knowledge and conversation’ of one’s ‘guardian angel’ via whom magical secrets will be revealed unto the practitioner. Via evocations of the twelve Kings and Dukes of Hell, the practitioner will gather a number of familiar spirits of aid to the operative magic encountered within the ‘third book’ of this text. The operative magic of the book, which like the operative content of other popular grimoires became incorporated into folk-magical practices, is centered around 242 magic word square talismans. Within the lore of the tome, through the use of these squares the practitioner may gain an array of powers, many of which are those sought after within the folk-magical and cunning arts, such as knowing the past and the future, the conjuration of various spirits and visions, weather magic, to gain treasures and wealth, to cure various maladies, to excite love or hatred, to discover thefts and to open locks.
